I was at Madison Square Garden last night. The insane crushing boredom of three humdrum fights followed by the visceral and compelling 12 rounds of oddly legal violence perpetrated by Joe Calzaghe on Roy Jones Jr.
Given all the regulation in the world it is rather extraordinary that boxing remains legal in New York yet the spectacle remains unique in ‘sport’ and fabulous to watch and at one level you can only admire the protagonists for their fitness and fearlessness.
Boxing also has the remarkable capacity to attract the glitterati and the thickeratti in equal numbers and thereby illustrates the reason for its continued existence. When the Colisseum no longer operates a nightly show with the christians on the menu boxing provides a substitute.
