Bush was right

An unusual statement, you may think, from a self-declared bleeding heart liberal. Happily this Bush is unrelated. Vannevar Bush (1890-1974) wrote a piece called ‘As we may think’ in  the Atlantic Monthly in 1945.In it he foresaw the concepts of database design, the PC and indeed the internet all accessed through a device he christened the Memex.This post is principally intended to bring to your intention a recently published anthology of the best of the Atlantic Monthly under the title The American Idea. For one volume to capture the thinking that provoked abolition, civil rights, feminism  and the internet may sound like required reading. It is.
